Censer from the Abalone Shell
Description
Censer from the Abalone Shell
The Indians use abalone shells in their rituals to smoke medicinal plants such as sage and yerba santa. The shell of the genus haliotis is also known as the green shell, the blue shell, or the ear of Venus. It consists of microscopic plates of calcium carbonate, stacked and connected to each other by a protein substance. This structure absorbs energy when struck instead of breaking, making it extremely durable. Its pearly interior shows beautiful iridescent reflections.
What is the abalone shell censer?
In different cultures, it is a symbol of protection and balance. For Apache women, it is a symbol of the transition from childhood to adulthood. Burning incense with the abalone shell is invoking the power of the four elements: the fire of a burning match, the spirit of the ocean that penetrates the shell, the plant that concentrates the best of the earth, and the aromatic smoke that spreads through the air.
HOW TO USE?
Pour some sand into the shells. Light the herb package of your choice and put out the flame. Put the incense in the shell. Hold the shell with one hand and spread the smoke with the other hand to direct it towards the place or object you want to incense. When finished, leave the shell on a heat-resistant surface.
CAUTION:
The shape and size of each shell may vary from batch to batch. It can show natural imperfections, more or less regular contours and sunburn marks. These disadvantages are specific to this product as the shells are bound by hand from opening to final drying.
