Sono or Sonokeling wood is commonly known in Asia as Indian rosewood. The botanical name of the Sono tree is Dalbergia latifolia. It comes from tropical monsoon forests located at low altitudes in south-east India. Some common names in English include rosewood, Bombay blackwood, roseta rosewood, East Indian rosewood, reddish brown rosewood, Indian rosewood, and Java rosewood. Its Indian common names are beete and satisal. The tree grows up to 40 meters tall with a dense canopy dome and is evergreen but locally deciduous in drier subpopulations, making the tree very drought tolerant. Not all species in the large genus Dalbergia produce rosewood; only about a dozen species do so. The genus Dalbergia was named after the Swedish brothers Nicholas Dalberg and Carl Gustav. The first is a physician and botanist, the second studied the West Indies. The species latifolia comes from the Latin word "latiflorus", meaning broad leaves.
Durability of Indian rosewood wooden products
Rosewood is an extremely slow-growing species, usually with a long, straight trunk. Sono wood is hard, heavy, durable and well resistant to insects, and when properly dried, it is highly resistant to fungi. When processed, the wood gives off a sweet smell that may linger for some time. Some pieces may have an unusual aroma which is the result of the fragrance spray and not the quality of the wood. The wood from the tree is used to make high-quality furniture and cabinets, guitar bodies and frets, exotic veneers, wood carvings, luxury parquet flooring, boats and skis. The natural color of Sonokeling wood ranges from golden brown to dark purplish brown, with darker brown, almost black streaks. The wood darkens with age, usually becoming a deep brown. Sono wood is highly appreciated around the world for its excellent long straight hole properties, strength, high density and natural dark and elegant, beautiful wood grain.
